Thanks for the update packs Xable. Great job.
Is it possible to use a slipstreamed CD to update an existing installation?
While keeping my slipstreamed ISO up to date I don't want to have to reinstall it every time I wamt to update my many virtual machines.
I have tried but I think the old option to 'repair' an installation no longer exists.

Hi MacNala,
Is it possible to use a slipstreamed CD to update an existing installation?
Nope that`s not how they work.
What I do, is download the updates from the microsoft download centre, make a script to install them and copy them to a USB stick. Then all you have to do is plug the stick into each machine and run the script.

Fine, thanks for the clarification.
I do it to my virtual machines slightly differently. I link to a folder containing the updates downloaded from MS Catalog Site.
I had not thought of using a script to apply them all - nice touch I will try it.
The problem is selecting which updates to download.
If I select all the updates which are flagged as for Windows XP SP3 X86 and download them I think that would suffice.
Do you see any problems in doing it that way?

No problem, but you will get optional updates aswell as the one`s WU want`s you to install doing it that way.
What I do is check windows update for the updates needed and just download those only. If all your machines are of similar hardware/software config then you only need to check WU on one machine.

Thats a good point. I will try that too. Thanks again.

I have tried some of the updates from the Windows Catalog and a lot of them require operator responses. There must be a switch or method that bypasses these but I haven't found it yet.
Can you help?

Your spot on with the switch, you can see all supported ones by using the /help or /? switch. I usually use these three.
WindowsXP-KB956744-x86-ENU.exe /quiet /norestart /nobackup

Just make sure to use the right switches...
For type-1 updates: '/q /n', but i prefer '/q /o /n /z', which additionally disables the uninstall-folders and speeds up the install...
For type-2 updates: '/q:a /r:n'.
Edit: Beaten by xable...

Thanks for that info. Pardon my ignorance what is a type-1 and what a type-2?

Martin`s needlessly confusing you now, just run the help switch to see what switches are supported and you`ll be fine.
