Where does this version of QFECheck come from? I believe I understand versions lower that came from Win2K or XP updates, but this one confounds me. Is it official MS, and if so, from what specificaly [a resource kit or separate package, etc.]?

I don`t use that version so couldn`t tell you anything about it. I use a newer version, v 6.2.29.0, that`s from the Microsoft Product Support Reporting Tool.

I believe a changelog file indicates that qfecheck 6.1.0.0 is part of one of the xable XP update packs. Is that accurate?
cjl [thanks for the newer version's "lineage"]
ps: Would still be curious where 6.1.0.0 originated from; perhaps an earlier version of that tool?

Thanks for the lead to the MS reporting tool. I now know where the 6.1.0.0 version *WAS*:
An earlier package [see KB816819 - Description of the Microsoft Platform Support Reporting Utility] has been stripped down to only standalone small packages that can be be downloaded, but the documentation of the "Alliance" edition indicates support files in the same general structure as the reporting tool you linked to. Within those files is qfecheck 6.1.0.0 . However, I cannot find a link to the download for MPSTools_x86.exe [Version 5.1.2600.0 08/27/2004 507,697 Bytes] described in the available doc file that it would be contained within.

Yes as you can see from the changelog`s it was part of the update pack in the past, it was added August 2006, it was split into a seperate addon June 2007 and was updated to v6.2.29.0 July 2007.
August 2006 is a long time ago and I cannot recall exactly where I downloaded it, though I can say with 100% certainty that it was a genuine original microsoft binary. As are all of the files I use.
