Disable Autorun.inf permenantly on removable drivers

Hi,
I am looking for solution to permanently disable the autorun.inf files from the removable storage drives say for example external hard disk or USB flash disk. I have installed windows xp sp2 with March 2008 updates. I am facing serious problem with hidden autorun.inf file (of course I can delete them by typing attrib -r -h -s e:\autorun.inf then del e:\autorun.inf (assuming the E: is the removable drive). Every time USB is intserted typing this command is a tedious work. Is there any work around I shall be thank ful. Thanks for the excellent updated packs.

nLite can disable autorun or you can google it.

Thanks a lot xable. I tried with nLite doesn't actually disable the autorun but if you insert any removable drive doesn't auto run automatically but will not prevent somebody double clicks a USB drive loaded with malicious autorun.inf.  After some search through Yahoo! and Google as you have suggested I come across http://windowssecrets.com/2007/11/08/02 … un-attacks site which explains a workaround to solve this issue. This is working with my laptop so far so good. Is there any way I can make it with xable or with nLite with this type of tuning.

You want to disable autorun.inf alltogether not just the popups then..

I could make an addon to do that based on the info in that link, which is basicly just adding a reg entrie. Be aware though that anything which relies on the settings in autorun.inf won`t run, because obviously you`ve disabled it. In those cases you`d have to temporarily disable the reg entrie.

Re: Disable Autorun.inf permenantly on removable drivers

Thanks a xable. I have done some testing. Only problem I found is with the password protected U3 drive is not at all loading while if there is no password the U3 interface is not loading but users can access the folders right away faster than loading the U3 interface takes a lot of time to do so.

To summarize, I am quite satisfied with disabling the autorun. I have already disabled the autoplay via nLite. I would appreciate a lot if you could make an addon for the registry tweak.

That`s one example of something relying on autorun.inf for it`s settings, I`m sure there are more things that do this too but they are rare.

Made an addon for it anyway, you can grab it here.
