Updates: Critical? High Priority? Recommended? Says who???

I've experimented with using the update packs on this site along with nLite and have had no issues at all, everything works fine.  I have no complaints.

I was looking at some other "update" type programs like Windows Updates Downloader and Autopatcher and I decided to mess around with Autopatcher a bit, and in doing so some questions were raised.

I installed a fresh nLite image with the Xable update pack from October '09, and then I ran Autopatcher.  After you run it it shows already-installed updates in blue, and not-installed ones in black.  As expected, most updates under the Critical Updates section were shown in blue since they were already integrated with the Xable update pack.  However, the following 11 Critical updates ('critical' as defined by Autopatcher I guess?), were not installed:

941569 Media Player
931906 CAPICOM
923789 Flash Player
951376 Bluetooth Stack
953155 Internet Printing Service
958752 AFD.SYS compatability
952069 Windows Media Components vulnerabilities
970483 Internet Information Services vulnerabilities
961371 Embedded OpenType Font Engine vulnerabilities
973525 Cumulative Security Update of ActiveX Kill Bits
975254 FTP Service for Internet Information Services vulnerabilities

Also, in the 'Recommended' updates where I would expect everything to show in black, it showed 2 updates in blue (already installed):

898461 Permanent copy of the Package Installer
952287 MDAC malfunction or data loss

As I said at the beginning of my post, I have no issues with the Xable update packs and am completely satisfied with them.  What I'm confused about is what determines if an update is 'critical' or 'high priority' or 'recommended.'

The 11 updates listed above that didn't get installed with the Xable pack... they're 'critical' but not 'high priority' ???  A clarification would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

My pack is divided into High-Priority (Critical updates are included in those) and Optional updates, the same as windows update. None of the optional updates are included in my pack as you can see on the contents page.

I don't know what autopatcher's detection method is so can't comment on that but, if it's flagging updates that are included in my pack as not being installed then it's method is flawed when comparing against slipstreamed installations.

Rest assured if windows updates is clear my pack worked and your patched.

Thanks for the reply.  Yes, I forgot to mention that I also ran Windows Updates after a fresh install with October's update pack and it was clear, so I feel securely patched.  wink
